Can Dogs Eat Bananas?

Can Dogs Eat Bananas?

Bananas offer a soft texture and mild flavor many dogs enjoy. They’re naturally higher in sugar, so think “occasional treat,” not a daily staple. Keep treats/topper foods to about the 10% rule of daily calories.

How much should I give?

Start with a few small pieces and watch for tummy upset. Larger dogs can have a small handful of bite-size pieces; smaller dogs just a few bites. Keep portions modest and occasional.

Ask your vet first if your dog has diabetes, pancreatitis, kidney issues, or is on a prescription diet.

Easy ways to serve banana

  • Thin slices as quick training treats.
  • Frozen “coins”—slice and freeze on a tray; serve a couple as a cool snack.
  • Mashed on a lick mat—spread thin; keep the portion small.

What to avoid

  • Banana peels: tough to digest and may cause GI upset.
  • Banana chips/dried banana: sugar can be concentrated; many chips are sweetened or fried.
  • Banana bread/muffins: added sugar, fats, and sometimes xylitol (toxic to dogs) in human products—skip.
  • Large chunks: can be a choking risk; always cut small and supervise.

If your dog ate a peel or a lot of banana

Monitor for vomiting, reduced appetite, or constipation/loose stool. Contact your veterinarian if you’re concerned, especially for small dogs or if a large amount was eaten.
