Inside Allergy & Itch Support: Every Ingredient Explained

What is actually in it?

Most itch supplements on the shelf are a chew with a little active ingredient buried in it. We went the other direction — a capsule, six actives, and a short label you can read without a magnifying glass.

• Quercetin. A plant flavonoid found naturally in apples and onions. It is the ingredient people usually come looking for, because it supports the cells that release histamine — the ones behind that maddening seasonal itch. We wrote a whole guide on quercetin for dogs if you want the deep version.
• Nettle leaf. A staple in human herbalism for seasonal irritation for a very long time, and it does the same work here. More on nettle for dogs.
• White oak bark. Traditionally used as an astringent — the herb that supports skin that is raw, weepy, and unhappy rather than just itchy.
• Echinacea root. Best known for immune support in people. Here it supports normal immune function during the stretch of the year when the immune system is working overtime.
• Astragalus root. An adaptogen used to support balance rather than to push the immune system in one direction. Allergies are an overreaction, so "balance" is the word that matters.
• Papaya fruit. A natural source of papain, a digestive enzyme. It is in there to help your pet get the most out of the rest of the formula.

The other two things on the label are diatomaceous earth and a vegetable-cellulose capsule. We would rather name them than pretend the label is shorter than it is.

How do you know if your pet needs it?

The signs are rarely dramatic. They are the small, repetitive things you stop noticing because they have been going on so long:

• Licking or chewing at paws, especially in the evening
• Scratching that picks up in spring and late summer
• Rubbing a face along the carpet or furniture
• Recurring ear irritation and head shaking
• A coat that has lost its shine, or flaky skin
• Red or irritated patches where the skin gets worried at

How does it work?

Honestly? By supporting the systems already involved, not by switching the itch off like a light.

Environmental allergies in pets are an immune overreaction to things that are not actually threats — pollen, grass, mold, dust mites. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that allergic reactions in pets show up on the skin far more often than as the sneezing we get, which is why so much of this shows up as licking and scratching in the first place. Left alone, the scratching does its own damage — that is how an ordinary itchy patch turns into the raw, weeping sore the Cornell Riney Canine Health Center calls a hot spot.

So the formula works on the upstream part: supporting a normal histamine response, supporting balanced immune function, and supporting healthy skin through the season. It is daily maintenance, not an emergency treatment. A raw, infected, or painful patch of skin needs your veterinarian, and nothing here changes that.

Why we made it a capsule instead of a chew

Because the chew is the problem we set out to avoid.

To hold a treat together you need starches, binders, glycerin, flavorings, and often color. That is a lot of extra material going into a pet who is already reacting to things — and the active ingredient ends up as a small part of what they actually swallow. For a sensitive animal, every additional ingredient is one more thing to react to.

A capsule skips all of it. And it is flexible in a way a chew is not: give it whole, tuck it into something soft, or twist it open and stir the powder through the food they already eat, kibble or raw. Picky cats generally do better with the last one.

It is for dogs and cats three months and older, dosed at one capsule per 25 lbs daily — so most cats and small dogs are a single capsule, and anything above that gets split between morning and evening. No artificial flavors or colors. If your pet is on medication, check with your vet before adding it.
